Buying
Geese
This
is a general guide as to how i
reccomend the purchase of geese.
If you want geese as social
pets, you would like to be able to interact
with them, we reccomend buying them as young as possible. Geese bought
from my farm are hand raised to 6 weeks before they are returned to
their parents. Purchasing before the return to their parents is highly
reccomended.
Goslings (baby geese) are very
easy to care for. They require a heat
lamp (regular 40watt light bulb and a reserve 25watt light bulb) ( or a
oil heater on low) for warmth. Depening as to how many you buy they can
come off heat at about 4 weeks at whitch age they are able to have the
lights removed but still kept in the box.
Goslings will start to eat grass from only a few days old, it is best
to take them out for walks a few times a day, calling them and getting
them used to your voice. They will follow you like young puppy! Keep an eye on
them as they are still vaunerable. At this age they can be fed chicken
crumbles or NU Duck a barastock product forumlated for waterfowl. All
good produce stores will stock both products.
At 6 weeks mine are fending for themselves. They move into
their adult
house, by 10 weeks in they will be fully feathered and require no
special attention. They will still follow you. The more attention you
pay to them at this early stage the more attention they will pay to you
when they are adults. As goslings get
older (6 weeks +) you can introduce wheat and lucern chaff. The wheat
helps to keep them warm and the lucern is a good source of protein and
builds up fat. I usually ix some crumbles with the
wheat and chaff. Grass will also be a staple part of their diet at this
age.
Hand raised geese make
ecceptional pets, the bonds you devolp at the young age will remain for
a lifetime.
